Abstract

Indoor air quality (IAQ) in terms of presence of airborne biological contaminants is a crucial aspect of human health and well-being as people spend a significant portion of their time indoors. These airborne biological contaminants range from viruses and bacteria to allergens and fungal spores. Exposure to airborne biological contaminants poses a significant threat to public health. Effective strategies to minimize exposure to aerobiological contaminants are paramount to safeguarding individual and community well-being. In this chapter, we have discussed a range of proactive measures designed to mitigate the risks associated with aerobiological contaminants, from engineering controls to personal protection and beyond. Furthermore, we have also explored the major challenges in controlling aerobiological contaminants. The battle against airborne biological contaminants necessitates a multi-faceted approach. By understanding the different types of contaminants, implementing engineering controls, practicing effective personal protection, and adopting health-promoting behaviors, individuals and communities can significantly mitigate exposure risks. These strategies, combined with public health measures and informed decision-making, form a comprehensive defence against aerobiological contaminants.
