Guidelines for Public Policy Considerations in Building Standards
Abstract
Water-damaged buildings (WDBs) account for about half the buildings in the country. These buildings are bought, sold and rented with little regard for the damage they can inflict on human health. WDBs are homes, workplaces, schools and stores. Many people undergo exposures to WDBs every day. About 24% of the population can become seriously ill from routine exposure. However, there is inadequate legal protection for the vulnerable individual to have safe access to the most basic needs in the realms of housing, access to work and education. What would it look like to have safe building and maintenance practices for these millions of individuals? Cutting-edge science from the Health Effects Roster of Type Specific (Formers) of Mycotoxins and Inflammagens, Version II (HERTSMI-2), proteomics, transcriptomics, volumetric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI studies) and re-exposure trials provides evidence of causation like never before. Public policy must align with science to ensure safe environments for the millions of genetically vulnerable individuals.
