Actinobacteria: Boon or Bane?

Abstract

For centuries, Actinobacteria have been a focus of research, particularly due to their association with pathogenic microbes like Mycobacterium tuberculosis, Corynebacterium diphtheriae, and Streptomyces scabies. While they are often noted for their pathogenic species, the phylum Actinobacteria also include a wealth of beneficial microbes which play a crucial role in human well-being. These bacteria thrive in diverse environments—ranging from moderate to extreme conditions—and can be found as free-living organisms or as endoparasites. Moreover, they are among the largest producers of antibiotics, however their socio-economic impact is underscored. This review attempts to explore whether this phylum is ultimately a boon or bane to mankind.
